Immersion Scheme

Immersion Scheme - Ysgol Maes Garmon

For many years, Ysgol Maes Garmon has welcomed pupils from English-medium primary schools to year 7 as part of the school’s Immersion Scheme. Led by Mrs Gwennan Parry Thomas, the process of immersing learners in Welsh begins in year 6, with the pupils coming to school daily following the May half term to prepare them for Welsh-medium secondary education. All year 7 subjects will be taught to these pupils bilingually, increasing the use of Welsh as the year progresses. There will also be additional opportunities for them, including a trip to Glan-llyn.

As their confidence increases during year 8, pupils will integrate with mainstream classes in some subjects. By year 9, they will have joined their peers and will be following a full curriculum through the medium of Welsh. Throughout their journey, Mrs Thomas and the Welsh department will be supporting them as they familiarise themselves with the language and take advantage of all the special opportunities available to them at Ysgol Maes Garmon.

Year 5 and 6 Welsh learners will have the opportunity to join in bespoke workshops to learn more about the Immersion Scheme. For more information, contact swyddfa@ymg.cymru for a digital copy of the Immersion Scheme prospectus, or call 01352 750678 to make an appointment to visit the school.
